FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
THE CANONISATION OF ST CARLO ACUTIS: Last Sunday evening, the Church witnessed a momentous occasion: the canonisation of Carlo Acutis, making him the first saint of the 21st century. Carlo died at just 15, but in his short life he showed a profound devotion to the Holy Eucharist and an inspiring way of integrating his faith with everyday life.
What makes Carlo such a powerful role model is how he spoke to people like us in a world shaped by digital connections and modern challenges. He used his talents—especially working with computers—to share stories of Eucharistic miracles and help deepen people’s love for Jesus.
Although Saint Carlo’s life was brief, it teaches us that holiness isn’t about doing something huge—it’s about being faithful in small things, loving others, choosing kindness, using our gifts well, and always being close to Jesus, especially in the Eucharist.
Last year I had the privilege of visiting Carlo Acutis’ tomb in Assisi’s Sanctuary of the Renunciation, a part of the Church of St Mary Major. This sacred place is deeply connected to the life of St Francis of Assisi, as it is the very spot where Francis cast aside his rich garments in favour of a poor habit, choosing a life completely devoted to God. To see the resting place of another young saint, who gave his life so fully to Christ, was truly moving.
May Carlo Acutis inspire our students, families, and staff to live courageous faith in our own lives—to be saints in our time, just as he has shown us. As a school community, may we look to St Carlo Acutis as a model of youthful faith, Eucharistic devotion, and everyday holiness.
Loving God,
We thank you for the gift of St Carlo Acutis,
who showed us that even the young can be saints.
Help us to love the Eucharist as he did,
to use our gifts to serve others,
and to stay close to Jesus in all that we do.
St Carlo Acutis, pray for us.
Amen

FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST: Although I was unable to be in attendance, it was terrific to hear that so many dads and significant male figures attended our Father’s Day breakfast last Friday.
There was a joyful atmosphere at the breakfast prepared by staff and parent helpers. Many excited students shared a delicious breakfast with their fathers, granddads, and other significant males in their lives. The morning went off well and I would like to thank Kristie Pettit who organised the morning and was ably supported by the staff and parents who gave up their time to support this school community event. The feedback from those present was very positive. I hope you all had a wonderful Father’s Day!
In preparing to write this newsletter, I was reminded that the present-day celebration of Father’s Day goes back to the time of the Middle Ages when the celebration of fatherhood was observed on 19th March. This day was celebrated on the same day as the feast day of Saint Joseph. Father’s Day was not celebrated in other countries outside the Catholic traditions until the beginning of the 20th century.
Father’s Day is celebrated across the world with the objective of honouring the contribution of fathers in our lives. It is a day which celebrates the endless efforts, initiatives and contributions of all fathers.
INTENTIONS FOR 2026: We have a large number of families on the waiting list for St Francis Xavier and understand there maybe some families not returning next year. Please notify the office if your child/ren are not returning to St Francis Xavier in 2026 as this will support our class size planning and organisation.
ARRIVING TO SCHOOL PUNCTUALLY: A gentle reminder of the importance of arriving at school punctually each day. Our morning session is vital, with teachers outlining the day and beginning the Literacy Block – a key part of our learning program.
When students arrive on time, they begin the day calmly, settled, and ready to learn. Building this routine helps set them up for success and ensures they don’t miss out on important learning opportunities.
SUPPORTING CHILDREN EXPERIENCING SCHOOL REFUSAL: School refusal can be stressful for both children and parents. For some primary-aged children, mornings bring worry, tears, or even stomach aches when it’s time to leave for school. Experts such as the Raising Children Network and psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg remind us that early, gentle support makes a big difference.
One practical way families can help is by focusing on organised, calm mornings. When children feel rushed, or sense parent stress, their own anxiety can increase. Being on time and having predictable routines, like laying out clothes the night before, preparing lunches early, and leaving a buffer for travel, takes the pressure off everyone. This gives parents space to be present, to listen, and to reassure their child, rather than racing against the clock. (Of course, this is easier said than done—but even small adjustments can help.)
Tips for parents:
- Prepare as much as possible the night before.
- Keep mornings calm and consistent, even if challenges arise.
- Stay positive and encourage small steps toward attending school.
- Reach out early to teachers or the school counsellor if worries persist.
Tips for educators:
- Greet children warmly to make the transition smoother.
- Offer a “soft landing” at school, such as a helper role or quiet activity.
- Communicate openly with families so routines are consistent.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DAY: A reminder that the last day of term, Friday 26th September is a Professional Learning Day for the staff of St Francis Xavier which means it is a pupil free day.
Have a wonderful week ahead!
Tony

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross
This coming weekend's reading is from John 3:13–17 - As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
As a family, brainstorm a list of family highlights and memories that are celebrated such as accomplishments, achievements and awards. Spend time reflecting and reminiscing about these moments in life. Remind each family member of how proud you are of them by pointing out their achievements and successes.
The word ‘exaltation’ means to raise high, to lift up, to sing praise to. Remember that God loves us and as a result of loving us so much, he gave us his only Son, Jesus. Conclude by praying together the Sign of the Cross, a prayer that exalts God’s love.

Kinder Transition Day 1
We welcomed our 2026 Kindergarten students and their families into our school on Monday for their first 2 hour transition session. It was wonderful to see the bubbling excitement from our future students as they participated in learning and play activities in the Kinder classrooms. Parents and carers stayed for a short presentation and morning tea in the Library. It was great to get to know the families of our 2026 Kindies a little better! We look forward to seeing our future Kindies again next Monday, 15th Sept, 8:50am-10:50am.
Thank you to Mr Brad Kliese and Mrs Rosie Darke for preparing and leading the transition session.
Thank you to our parent helpers Maree Melville, Kurt Melville, Leanne Jesser, Stacey Briggs, Kahlee O’Brien and Sarah Dunlavie for giving up their time to assist in the smooth running of the event.

Year 4 Visit to St Andrews
By Mason Hordern And Ari Hilyard
On Thursday the 4th of September, Year 4 visited St Andrews Nursing Home where we got to meet many elderly residents.
We got to ask them questions about their life experiences and what they love to do.
We were amazed by the awesome facilities that were there to make St Andrews feel like home.
We enjoyed getting to know the residents and learning about themselves, and all of us in Year 4 feel so lucky to have this experience.

Practicum Teachers in Year 2 and Year 6
On behalf of our entire school community, we'd like to extend our sincerest gratitude to Ruby and Sam for their outstanding contributions over the past four weeks. It's been a pleasure having them work with our Year 6 and Year 2 students. We also want to give a special thank you to Mr Cook and Mrs Niland for their invaluable guidance and mentorship, which helped make the practicum placements such a success. We wish Ruby and Sam all the best in their future teaching careers.

Spotlight on Music in Creative Arts
This term, our students from Kindergarten to Year 6 have been on a fantastic musical journey with Mrs Lee. She has guided them through the fundamentals of music using both untuned and tuned instruments. Students have been actively engaged, learning about concepts like beats, timbre, timing, and expression as they play along with and even compose their own pieces. Mrs Lee creates a vibrant and creative atmosphere for all our students. Here is a photo of a Year 4 lesson this week.

Dance Term 4 Provided by ZING ACTIV

School Band: Music, Teamwork and Achievement
Over the past fortnight our school band has given us two wonderful reminders of what can be achieved when talent, dedication and collaboration come together.
At the Lismore Musical Festival Eisteddfod the band was challenged to perform two pieces with contrasting styles. They rose to the occasion with an energetic rendition of Taylor Swift’s Welcome to New York and a heartfelt performance of Lewis Capaldi’s Someone You Loved. The adjudicator commended their ability to play as one, praising the band’s tight timing and highlighting the beautiful vocals of Mila. Their efforts were rewarded with first place, a fantastic result for such a young group of musicians.
Beyond competition the band also shared their music with our community at our recent Father’s Day liturgy, once again performing Someone You Loved. Their music added a moving and prayerful dimension to the celebration and showcased how the arts enrich our faith life as a school.
Milla (vocals) Jaxon (drums) Aurelia (bass guitar) Nathan (keys) Josie (keys) and Grace (guitar) are to be congratulated for not only their musical talent but also the perseverance, teamwork and joy they bring to every rehearsal and performance. Their achievements remind us that learning is not only about knowledge and skills but also about creating something beautiful together.

School Choir: Sharing Joy Through Song
This week our school choir had the privilege of visiting Crowley Care to share the gift of music with the residents. The students performed four songs that brought smiles, laughter and a few happy tears to those who gathered to listen.
The visit was more than a performance. It was a chance for our students to connect with others through music, to bring joy and companionship and to live out our school’s mission of service and community. It was a rich experience of giving and receiving through the arts for both the residents and our students.
We are proud of the way our choir represented St Francis Xavier, showing kindness, respect and enthusiasm. Their voices lifted hearts and their presence reminded us of the power of music to build connection across generations.

Writers Festival Sparks Imagination
In Week 6 our school came alive with creativity during the annual Writers Festival. Students explored a series of Inspiration Stations designed to stretch their imaginations and inspire original writing.
From entering The Magic Door to uncovering clues in the Detective’s Office to stepping into Candyland and creating magical lollipops, every station invited students to see the world through a writer’s eyes. Some were transported by time machines, others packed mysterious suitcases for unknown adventures, and many uncovered mysteries waiting to be solved in cafés, sports halls and even beneath the sea.
These rich experiences gave students the chance to write, draw and create in ways that were playful yet purposeful. Most importantly, the festival reminded us that writing is not only a skill but also a joyful way of exploring ideas and sharing stories.
We are proud of the creativity shown by all our young authors. Below are some of their imaginative writing samples.

Athlete Spotlight: Jessica Aslin, a True Champion
Jessica Aslin is one of St Francis Xavier's most outstanding athletes. While she recently represented Polding in soccer, her talents span well beyond the pitch. This year, she was named the age champion for both athletics and cross country, but her true passion lies in combat sports.
A national champion in three different disciplines, Jessica has had a remarkable year. She has already competed in the National Championships for Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA, achieving first place in every event.
- Muay Thai: National Champion
- Jiu-Jitsu: National Champion (Gi and No-Gi), marking her fourth consecutive title.
- MMA: Undefeated National Champion for two years.
Next up, she will represent the NSW boxing team at the National Championships in Darwin, where she hopes to achieve a "grand slam" across all four disciplines. What a legend!
